I recently had the privilege of discussing Big Tech, Google’s data collection methods, and democracy with esteemed psychologist, professor, and author Dr Robert Epstein.
Dr Epstein is the former editor-in-chief of the prominent psychology website Psychology Today. He has made multiple appearances on podcasts like the Joe Rogan Experience promoting awareness of how Big Tech has the potential to subvert democratic processes.
For example, he explained how Google uses the data it collects from users in the US to identify whether they are more likely to vote Democrat or Republican, then promotes election messaging (including reminders to enrol and vote) to users of a particular political persuasion.
The political implications of this are far reaching and according to Dr Epstein, Google went so far as to obscure search results related to the recent attempted assassination of Donald Trump, muddying the waters regarding the former President.
It seems Big Tech decides which news stories are relevant or should be ignored which, of course, has implications for Australia as well as the US.
You can watch the BASED episode featuring Dr Robert Epstein here:
We had some tech issues with Dr Epstein’s video but it is a robust discussion that I’m sure you’ll enjoy.
Yours sincerely,
