Michael Barry Henderson (Letters, 24/03) claims nuclear power “makes no sense for a country with a small population of 27 million, like Australia” because we don’t have “a history of skilled nuclear power engineers” or “any land set down for nuclear waste storage.”
Finland has a population of 5.6 million and its new full-sized Olkiluoto 3 nuclear plant proved just last year that nukes offer much cheaper electricity; it slashed their power prices by 75.38 percent.
Somehow Finland found skilled workers despite their population being just 21 percent of Australia’s and they found a way to dispose of waste despite having 16.4 people per square kilometre compared to Australia’s 3.5 people per square kilometre.
Nuclear power is a mature technology, it’s available off-the-shelf, it provides cheap, reliable, CO2-free electricity, and the only obstacles blocking it are uninformed green-left ideologues sitting in our parliaments.
Your power prices have quadrupled since 2005 because of the rush to renewables and we’ll soon have rolling blackouts as reliable generators are closed.
If you’re voting for Labor, the Liberals or the Greens, you’re voting for expensive power and rolling blackouts.
