Get fired up, as cold bureaucrats take the ban culture too far ..
In the war against dignity, governments have targeted the cheapest and oldest way to keep warm, with new plans to ban people from burning wood.
An idea so dumb that even “greenie” Matt Kean, when environment minister, abandoned it has been enthusiastically taken up by the ACT government and one of the coldest alpine regions in NSW, Armidale City Council, which must believe its last marketing tool is to turn Guyra into the icebox of the nation by banning fire in a town of -10C winter nights – the same temperature as an average January in Montreal.
The modern wood heater, recently classified as a “carbon neutral” heating source, uses dead trees as a renewable and sustainable fuel. But it is set to be banned in all new homes and existing models “phased out”, even after new tech drastically reduced emissions by 75 per cent compared with decade-old models.
As a gas shortage looms and electricity prices soar, the plan is to replace all wood heaters with electric heating, even as the Australian Home Heating Association modelling shows modern models represent only 3.6 per cent of wood smoke.
In the country, people can cut a load of firewood and often do so to help those in need through the winter. They can’t cut you a cheque to pay your power bill.
It’s not bad enough to be broke; you have to freeze, too.
In the thick wad of ACT and Armidale bureaucratese drafts, is no mention of how to keep babies warm on our coldest winter nights when we can’t afford to power what blows or glows, and SIDS research dictates no blankets or co-sleeping.

It goes back to what constitutes an actual law.
