These people in the research community have such the wrong idea about fusion. Its because they have a kind of superstitious notion as to what energy is. Fusion is very gentle, simple, and easy. But its never going to be a big energy spinner. Even Helium 3 fusion is probably way overblown as a potential SOURCE of energy in my view. I'm more interested in Helium 3 as a STORE of energy. Effectively as a battery or perhaps an improvement on diesel, which despite some peoples concerns still remains an outstanding store of energy. Diesel is just AWESOME. So we will be doing really well if we can improve on diesel.
Maybe one day helium-3 will best diesel. Since we may be able to manufacture vast quantities of helium 3 with the essentially free electricity available in the inner solar system (via he solar wind and massive electrical capacitance buildup in inner solar system space.)
There is one form of alleged "fusion" that is really fission in disguise and this is the Boron "fusion" (I classify it as fission). Now thats a serious big deal. Money is purposefully being sent to fusion projects that are never going to work. Most fusion projects are a massive diversion. And conversely, since the Boron "fusion" (ie fission) project is so promising, its being starved of funds.
I am happy about any improvement in batteries but chemical storage is now near its peak. Not a great deal of topside. If we want fuel efficiency we should be looking for more holistic change. If we were in a situation of 5 storey buildings and everyone getting around with backpacks and electric scooters, with no fear of being hit by a car ....... through-put and energy efficiency would be outstanding.
