Once upon a time a group of truckers decided to drive their semis to Canberra in protest against the Gillard government. Tens of thousands of Australians lined the roads to cheer the truckers on, so unpopular was the government. The truckers reached Canberra, held a rally, again attended by thousands of people, then they went home.
And accomplished absolutely nothing.
Once upon a time early last year people started holding rallies against vaxxine mandates and passports. Small in numbers to start, those rallies now attract more than half a million people nearly every Saturday.
And they are accomplishing absolutely nothing.
One upon a time a group of truckers in Canada decided to drive to the capital to protest against the Trudeau government's vaxxine mandates and passports. Tens of thousands of people have lined the streets to cheer them on, so unpopular is the government.
And they will accomplish absolutely nothing.
Recently another group of truckers decided to drive to Canberra again to protest against vaxxine mandates and passports. Thousands cheered them on. And they accomplished absolutely nothing.
If you ask people why these efforts never accomplish anything, the most common answer you will get is "no media coverage". Well fancy that! The media, the propaganda arm of the enemy, isn't giving publicity to those opposed to the enemy. How unfair. Heaven forbid that people actually do something about it themselves.
In my time at Scheyville OTU one thing repeatedly hammered home was the importance of communication. Once battle is commenced communication ceases just being important - it becomes critical. So let's wind the clock back a bit and speculate on what might have happened, and might still happen, if a bit of communication was thrown into the mix.
Imagine if, back in 2011, when the original Convey had driven to Canberra, there had been people preceding the trucks, getting contact details of the people lining the streets. By the time that convey reached its destination there would have been a contact data base of hundreds of thousands all opposed to the Gillard government. All those people would know they were not alone and would have been easily motivated to continue the protests locally. It is quite possible the Gillard government would have been forced to the polls early, instead of dragging on for another two years.
Imagine if, at these now regular Saturday anti-vaxx protests a concerted effort was being made to gather contact details. There would now be well over a million people - all voters - all in touch with each other, comparing notes, planning and coordinating localised strategies. Over a million people - all voters - vowing to number the sitting member last if they represent Liberals, Labor, Nationals, or the Greens. Our mainstream politicians would be shitting themselves, mandates would be a dirty a word, and people would be ashamed to be seen in public wearing a completely ineffective mask against a non existent scamdemic.
But it's not going to happen for as long as people think simply forming a crowd on Saturdays and making a lot of noise is likely to accomplish anything.
I continue to live in hope, but time is running out. The next federal election is only three months away. It will probably be our last chance to take any meaningful political action at all.
