Article in today's ABC (where else?) about the government's intention to build a new gas fired power station at Kurri Kurri in the Hunter Region. This obviously deeply researched article (ha ha) is really about opposition to the plan (surprise surprise) and is written by the ABC's "political reporter" Steven Schubert. In it he states . . .
Any power plant burning a fossil fuel works in the same way.
The fuel is burnt to heat water and generate steam, which is shot at huge pressure to turn a turbine and a shaft, and the movement from that can be used to generate electricity.
One advantage of gas instead of coal is that it produces less greenhouse gas; another is how quickly the power plant can start up and produce electricity.
(Emphasis added)
This is total and utter crap. A gas turbine power generator is very similar to an aircraft jet engine. The turbines spin and generate electricity because of the expanding ignited exhaust gases, NOT because of steam. In fact there is no steam involved at all in the process **. This is the kind of nonsense we get for our $1.2 billion, when ideology becomes more important than facts.
You will find the articles here -
** There are systems called "combined cycle systems" where the exhaust gases, depleted of energy after driving a turbine and producing electricity, can be fed into a boiler to create steam and generate even more electricity. However these are not what is planned for the power stations the government intends building in NSW.
