Paul Fyfe (Letters, 26/01), we don’t “voluntarily choose to elect” politicians – we are forced to by law, leading to many uninformed votes.
Compulsion wasn’t needed for seatbelts – a decent information campaign would have sufficed. But with compulsion comes revenue from fines.
Ridiculously low speed limits lead to driver boredom and distraction – and more fines revenue.
Blood alcohol limits don’t stop drunk drivers because alcohol impairs cognition – but they do create fines revenue.
Banning phone use for drivers doesn’t stop phone addicts Facebooking behind the wheel – but does create revenue.
Compulsion wasn’t needed for bike helmets – see information campaign above. Also fines.
Mandatory pool fencing leads to complacency in parental supervision – also fines. If it was for safety, rivers would be fenced.
What “assault weapons” do you mean, Paul? Do you mean semi-trailers like the 2016 Nice terrorist used to kill 86 and injure 484 in five minutes? Many could have been saved if French citizens carried sidearms.
“Stupid and irresponsible” people make poor decisions every day and no amount of legislation will stop that but make it illegal and the government profits.
The world’s most qualified Covid whistleblower, former VP of Pfizer Dr Michael Yeadon, has publicly stated that Covid was just a flu, but the vaccines are a bioweapon – and your beloved government “mandated” that people took it, even if they were at no risk from Covid.
And anyone who believes elections reflect the will of the people simply has not been paying attention. With no risk of facing consequences for election theft, it has become rife.
The governments that dumbed whole generations down through a dysfunctional compulsory education system to force them to rely on the government and who profit from stupid people making stupid decisions injected you with a proven poison and want to do it again.
1920s US President Calvin Coolidge said, “Unless the people, through unified action, arise and take charge of their government, they will find that their government has taken charge of them. Independence and liberty will be gone, and the general public will find itself in a condition of servitude to an aggregation of organized and selfish interests.”
Coolidge was wise to the point of prescience, because in 2023 the people are indeed in servitude to an aggregation of organized and selfish interests.
