The only reason there are outages in coal power stations, Ruth of Freshwater, is because the government took away their maintenance budget by forcing them to buy Large Renewable Energy Certificates. The only reason coal, gas and oil prices are soaring is government restrictions on mining and using them. Rising energy costs are not the fuels' or machines' fault, Ruth, it's the government's. Same with your belief in the fiction that CO2 controls temperature. It doesn't, but the government told you it did to get greater control over you. Gerald, Kanimbla
Excessive housing costs and shortages are 100% the result of our three levels of government. Local govt is too inefficient, slow, and costly in development approvals and infrastructure provision. State govts share blame there as local govts are effectively departments of state govt, plus they add their own layers of cost and delay. The federal govt has brought in too many immigrants all competing for housing, has kept interest rates too low for long via its fully owned but "independent" RBA, and imposes too many taxes. The only way forward from here is for all three levels of govt to take massive haircuts to reduce their size, scope, influence, and costs. We need to cut govt by 50% by 2025. Smithy, Cairns
How classist is that professor? The high density, less leafy suburbs may "attract low socio-economic demographics" you arrogant overpaid snob, but we have to live somewhere. Maybe we should camp in your gated community on your manicured lawns under your leafy trees since you live off our production and taxes. Juss Sayen, Cairns
Can anyone tell me what is the most common greenhouse gas and what percentage of the atmosphere it typically is at 6pm on a January day in Cairns? Bonus points if you can tell me what the three main gases in the atmosphere are. (Hint - none of them are carbon.) Double bonus points if you voted for the Greens. Cedric, Kuranda
Dean Parkin, Michael Miller, (CP, 06/06) everyone who was born here, regardless of racial origin, is an indigenous Australian. What you are promoting is the politics of division and putting one subset of voices above all others - and it's a program that's been promoted in all democracies by communist powers since the 1960s. Horrie, Westcourt
Car buyers (6/6) are getting a real life lesson in supply side (Austrian School) economics, something that the Keynesian (Marxist) economists that have overrun governments and universities still refuse to acknowledge. Economist, Cairns
I shudder when I hear a Cairns councillor talk about adding "vibrancy and colour" to the CBD (CP 6/6). Just look at the "vibrancy and colour" they've added to the CBD over the last ten years. One Tooth Wally, Cairns North
